Fifteen years ago when our family moved from the city to a small acreage space with the thought of becoming more self-sufficient, we didn’t have a clue as to what it takes to live a homesteading lifestyle. It took a lot of work to seek out those willing to share the lost skills we needed to incorporate into our daily lives. Everything from how to create an organic garden from an area with nothing but gravel to the ins-and-outs of raising laying hens for our eggs was completely foreign to us.
Today the information needed to start your own homestead is readily accessible. The digital age has made it possible to not only read the in-depth tutorials needed to learn these skills but also being able to watch them via video. Easy peasy!
I’ve compiled a list of my absolute favorite websites in no particular order, ones that I refer to often when I have questions, in order to make it that much more simple for you! I hope you visit each unique site, ask questions, & more importantly, give their suggestions a try. Oh, and let them know you found them via IMSL 🙂 .
Heather began her homesteading journey on a small scale, with two 4×4 raised beds to be exact! Her site is full of practical advice and encourages all to “start where you are at, and do what you can do”.
Shelby, a homesteader located in W Tennessee, shares her knowledge on a beautifully laid out website with amazing images. She shares information on agriculture, livestock, & general homesteading advice for both the beginner as well as the seasoned homesteader.
Not a traditional “homesteading” site, but instead one that ” empowers active parents who want to develop a more self-sufficient lifestyle with how-tos, real-life advice, and honest views of modern work-from-home advice”. Angela has practical advice for those looking to become self-sufficient.
Liz is a fellow New Englander, homesteading on a small scale, 1/2 an acre in an urban setting to be exact. Her site is filled with helpful suggestions and shows homesteading is available for all no matter where you are. She packs a lot of punch in that 1/2 acre from gardening to raising chickens, ducks, & rabbits!
Heidi at Healing Harvest Homestead is one of my absolute favorites. Our affinity towards wild-crafting & healing with herbs in conjunction with gardening, live-stock & everything homesteading has to offer, makes this site one of my first stops when I have extra reading time.
Liz, a homesteader in Kumbia, Australia, shares her knowledge of beekeeping, livestock, & my favorite, permaculture gardening. Her site is jam-packed with information that is practical, beautifully presented, & entertaining to read.
Amy, a certified permaculture gardener, author, and educator shows us it is possible to sustainably garden anywhere. She “shares tips for applying permaculture to small-scale residential spaces: backyard gardens, front yard edible landscapes, and suburban micro-farms”.
Lauren began her journey as another micro-homesteader farming on 1/3 acre in the suburbs. She has now expanded her farm to 18 acres. Everything you could want to know in regard to homesteading and creating self-sufficiency skills can be found on her site.
Amber’s sharing of “old-timey wisdom for today” says it all. Her down to earth, commonsense knowledge & experience resonates with anyone looking to lead a more self-sustaining lifestyle.
Annie shares the knowledge and wisdom of three generations of women that have been past down to her and now to you. I especially love her focus on wild foraging & harvesting…a woman after my own heart 🙂 .
Jenna got me with the name 🙂 . This large family (8 kids!) runs this beautiful blog and farm at the same time, covering all that makes up a homestead. Not quite sure how she does it all, but a force to be reckoned with for sure!
Chris shares her 30+ years experience (a wise woman indeed) as an herbalist & offers so much information about creating products from them. Everything I love & am passionate about. Her 140-acre ranch located in British Columbia is the perfect setting for the gorgeous images she shares along with her wealth of knowledge.
Samantha, another New England based homesteader not too far from me 🙂 , runs a 53-acre conservation farm whose motto is “bee-friendly farming for a sustainable tomorrow”. Her strong focus on beekeeping, as well as her farm blog, are what keeps me coming back to her site.
Dana homesteads with her family of 5 in New Zealand. Her homesteading, fermenting, gardening, livestock, crafting, & DIY skills are what draws me in every time. Dana also runs a fun Facebook group, “Homestead Anywhere”, that I highly recommend.
You guessed it, April is based in central Ontario, Canada on 200 acres. Her passion for sharing their journey of farm to table eating is brought to us in a thoughtful & entertaining way through her writing as she shares their trials toward living the “so-called simple life”.
Amy is a self-proclaimed “quirky wife and mother who is doing all sorts of farmish things”. Her down to earth, entertaining, and often hilarious look at homesteading truths keeps me coming back. Amy also offers a wonderful podcast series as well.
Rachel is Maine based with a strong focus on gardening, harvesting, & preserving foods. What’s not to like? Her recipe for Mason Jar Italian Salad Dressing is a to die for 🙂 .
Kris’ beautiful, hugely popular (600,000+ followers!) site is filled with homesteading treasures with a strong focus on growing & cooking organically 🙂 . Her easy to navigate blog is filled with lovely photos & videos and one that homesteaders of any level will surely enjoy.
Jakob & Anna hail from Alberta, Canada. It is their mission to “be an inspiration to all cold climate homesteaders”. They focus strongly on living as simply & sustainably as possible & share their wisdom freely.
