Even though you may be expecting the loud noises and flashing lights of Fourth of July fireworks celebrations, your dog has no idea what is happening.
The legalization of cannabis use has led some dog owners to consider giving their pets CBD products during the anxiety-inducing holiday. But educating yourself on the risks is important to keep your dog healthy.
"I've practiced emergency medicine for 35 years," Dr. Jerry Klein, chief veterinary officer at the American Kennel Club, said."Marijuana toxicity has been on the increase since marijuana has become legalized in many states."
To keep your dog safe and calm this Fourth of July, here's everything you need to know about CBD products for dogs.
What is CBD?
Cannabinol, also known as CBD, is a chemical found in cannabis, according to Mayo Clinic. Although it is different from THC, the psychoactive chemical found in cannabis that produces a high, some people find CBD eases the symptoms of conditions like chronic pain, anxiety and epilepsy.
Many states in the U.S. have restrictions on the type of CBD product that can be purchased. As of June 2024, the sale of all CBD products derived from hemp, legally defined as cannabis containing less than 0.3% THC content, was legal in Arizona.
Some CBD products, which are only available with a prescription from a licensed health care provider, have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. But all other cannabis, cannabis-derived or CBD products are not FDA-approved.

How does CBD affect dogs?
Despite the expanding legalization of cannabis and cannabis-derived products, there is still limited research on the effect of CBD on dogs, according to the American Kennel Club,
A study performed at Cornell University observed dogs that ingested CBD chews before entering a stressful event. Of the canines studied, 83% of the dogs showed less stress or anxiety-related behavior. While this study is important in understanding how dogs react to CBD products, it was based on personal observation or anecdotal data.
"I think that'svery important to realize. Anecdotal reports are fine, but they're not scientific data," Klein said.
Always consult with a veterinarian before using
Many circ*mstances can determine whether CBD products are right for your dog, but you should always discuss with a veterinarian before making any consequential changes to your pet's routine.
"Before you start anything,whether it's an herbal product or anything that's new and could affect your dog's health,you should always ask your veterinarian first for their input," Klein said.
If your dog is taking other medications, a professional consultation is essential before giving your dog CBD products. Studies have found liver enzymes, which are involved in the metabolism of medication, may be affected by CBD in both humans and canines.
"CBD could be problematic depending if your dog has underlying medicalissues and is on medicine that may counteract or may be affected by any changes in the liver," Klein said.
Is cannabis toxic for dogs?
The ingestion or inhalation of THC is toxic for dogs. While fatality is rare, symptoms of cannabis poisoning typically present itself 30-90 minutes after exposure and can last for days. These symptoms include:
- Drowsiness or low energy
- Lack of coordination or falling before catching themself
- Dilated pupils
- Slower or faster heart rate
- Inability to hold in pee
- Diarrhea or vomiting
- Restlessness
- Rapid breathing
- Pale gums
If you suspect your dog is experiencing cannabis poisoning, you can call the 24/7 ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center hotline or take your dog to a veterinary hospital. Always be honest and specific about the possibility or means of cannabis poisoning so your veterinarian can properly treat your pet.
Where can I buy CBD products for dogs?
CBD products that have been made specifically for dogs come in a variety of forms like oils, tablets and treats. Because CBD products are not regulated by the FDA, it is easy to get confused or misled by marketing and packaging. The American Kennel Club advises dog owners to follow a veterinarian's recommendation and check for certificates verifying the CBD and THC amounts.
"The big concern is there's a huge variation between productsin terms of their quality and their potential combination of THC and synthetic cannabinoids," Klein said. "The bottom line is marijuana is toxic to dogs."

What is the recommended CBD dosage for dogs?
Factors like age, weight and breed play a role in finding the proper dosage for your dog. A dog that weighs less than 10 pounds will have a drastically different dosage recommendation than a dog that weighs more than 100 pounds.
"There's a great bearing in size and body weight and body mass in dogs," Klein said. "And "If you look at a Merckmanual for drug dosing, everything is pretty much done on milligrams per kilogram."
A veterinarian will be the best source for finding the right dosage. They will also likely recommend starting your dog on a smaller dose and working up from there.
How to keep your dog calm during fireworks
CBD products are not the only option to ensure your dog feels safe and calm during the Fourth of July. But it is important to plan for fireworks celebrations and the days leading up to the holiday.
"Celebration of fireworks and firecrackers doesn't start onJuly 4th anymore. It starts on July 1st or 2nd. So just be aware of that and contact your veterinarian," Klein said."If you have a problem on the 4th of July, most veterinariansare closed on holidays and vet emergency clinics are going to be just jammed."
A little panting and shaking are expected in any stressful situation. But when a dog becomes destructive to themselves and their environment, you need to have a plan to keep everyone safe.
The Arizona Humane Society recommends these crucial ways to prevent emergency situations. The precautions include:
- Proper identification: Make sure your pets have a collar with current ID tags and updated microchips.
- Keep pets indoors: Outside, dogs have a higher risk of running away when startled. Never bring your dog to a firework show and keep them away from at-home firework displays.
- Provide distractions: Create a safe space in your home with bedding, toys, water, or TV or music to distract from the excitement outside.
Again, a veterinarian is your best source of specialized information for your dog. They can prescribe other medication for severe anxiety or recommend physical products like a pressure shirt.
"I think it'simportant to be very upfront with your vet about what you are thinking about doing before you do itand just talk it out," Klein said. "And a veterinarian should be very open to at least discussing your questions and concerns."
