Super Simple 5 Ingredient Bath Bomb Recipe (2024)

Hello Lovelies:

There’s nothing quite like a relaxing hot bath, especially when you add something extra special like a bath bomb to the mix! But did you know that they’re incredibly easy to make yourself? It only takes 5 ingredients and about 10 minutes to put a super awesome fizzy delight together. Seriously!

Check out this super simple bath bomb recipe and see for yourself.

Why Make Your Own Bath Bombs

You may be wondering why you should even bother to make your own when you could easily go out and buy one. And the obvious answer is that you get to have fun and save money when you dive into a bath bomb recipe of your own… but it goes so much deeper than that!

Bath bombs often have fragrances and dyes in the mix that definitely add some whimsy but unfortunately aren’t that great for your well being.

What’s The Deal With Fragrances?

Sure we want our bath bombs to smell amazing and fragrances definitely make that happen. But since the ingredients used to create fragrances are protected trade secrets, it’s hard to know exactly what you’re putting on your body.

Fragrances are often made up of many synthetic chemicals and can cause mild to severe irritation, and when you’re in the tub you’re bathing in that for a while. I don’t know about you, but when I take a bath I definitely don’t aim to potentially irritate my skin or lungs. I’m usually aiming for a healthy, soothing moment of relaxation.

If you want to knowexactlywhat you’re putting on your body, fragrances don’t make the cut. And thankfully, essential oils can easily step in and save the day! But you can also make them scent free if that’s more your style.

What About Dyes

Take a look at any colourful bath bombs ingredients and you might notice something like this at the end:Blue 1, Yellow 5, Yellow 5 Lake, Blue 1 Lake. Every dye is unique. But if you take a look at the EWG’s skin deep database you’ll notice that they often come with their own unique potential risks too.

The biggest concern is their potential for bioaccumulation (source). While more research is definitely needed, it’s easier to simply cut out the artificial colours and be kind to your skin.

If you still want colour – a little fruit or vegetable juice goes a long way. Carrot, kale or beet juice can be used instead of water in the recipe to give you more dramatic colours. Turmeric powder can also go a long way.

If this all sounds a little silly, since you aren’t eating it after all, remember this:

Your Skin is Your Largest Organ

It’s easy to forget, but your skin is your body’s shield. It protects your insides from harm and plays an important role in your innate immune system. Your skin contains approximately 11 miles of blood vessels and countless nerve endings. And it’s often in a state of regeneration, so that it can always be fresh and strong and ready to protect you. You’re shedding 50 000 skin cells per minute as we speak! That’s about 1.6 pounds per year! Gross? Sure… but also pretty freaking amazing!

And what we place on our skin or the oils and products we bathe in for an hour or so can potentially pass through and be absorbed into our bloodstream. Think about things like nicotine and birth control patches; those products literally medicate our bodies through our skin. And some of the ingredients in your self-care products, bath bombs included, can potentially find their way into your blood stream too (source).

So having a bath bomb recipe on hand not only allows you the fun of creating them, it also allows you to control the ingredients that you’re ultimately putting on and potentially into your body. Pretty awesome eh?

Ingredients

  • 1/2Cup Baking Soda
  • 1/3Cup Cream of Tartar
  • 2TspOlive Oil
  • 25 to 35DropsEssential Oils (Your options are endless – lavender, peppermint, lime and orange are among my favourites)Optional
  • 1TspWater(Approximately – I prefer to use a spray bottle, 2 to 3 sprays usually works)

Instructions

  1. Thoroughly mix the dry ingredients in a medium sized mixing bowl.

  2. Once they are well blended add the olive oil and essential oils. Mix them in quick, before the mixture starts to fizz. It’s easiest if you use your hands at this point.

  3. Lastly, add the water. As mentioned above, I prefer to use a spray bottle. Spray and mix well (again, with my hands). The final product should be a crumbly mixture that holds shape only when you squeeze it together. It usually takes two or three sprays to get the right consistency. Using a teaspoon would also work, just be careful not to overdo it.

  4. Pack the mixture into your mold of choice. You can easily use a cupcake pan or you can spring for some bath bomb molds on Amazon (link in the post). If it’s a two part mold make sure to overfill and pack both sides, then press them together tightly.

  5. Keep them in a cool, dry area and let them dry out for a few hours. Enjoy!

Now it’s your turn – have you made your own bath products before? Are you excited to try this bath bomb recipe out? Which essential oils blends would you use? Let me know in the comments below!
